What is Reiki?
Frequent Reiki Questions: Answered!
What is Reiki? How does it benefit me?
Reiki is a natural form of healing which focuses on releasing energetic blockages from the body, mind, & spirit. Everything at its core is energy. In the practice of Reiki when something is alive, it holds vital life force energy "Ki". In other traditions it is referenced as Prana, Qi/Chi, Nyama, Mana, or the bio-energetic field.
Throughout our lives we have positive and negative experiences. When we suppress the negative emotions and do not understand how to navigate through whatever it is, the stress internalization accumulates in our aura as pockets of energy. This buildup of energy over time begins to negatively affect our Chakras system as subconscious patterns & behaviors begin to manifest in the mind along with physical reactions. Our Chakras are the energy centers that regulate the flow of energy in our body. Each one correlates with specific physiological and psychological properties.
This Vital life force energy "Ki" is our source of life and well-being. When energy is blocked or depleted, Ki is unable to naturally flow to the tissues and cells of the body to nourish them. Where the affected Chakras or energy pathways are blocked is where the emotional or physical dysfunction and "dis-ease" can attach & manifest. Mikao Usui, the founder of our lineage of Reiki, calls Reiki "the miraculous medicine of all diseases" and "the secret art to inviting happiness." Reiki is known to treat illness at the root cause.
All of our Reiki Services include a chakra evaluation to tell you where the blockages are and what patterns to focus on changing in your life.
What happens during a Reiki session?
The Reiki treatment itself consists of the Reiki healer placing their hands gently on or slightly above the client's body. This will begin with the flow of energy most commonly felt as warmth or heat. The recipient pulls the Reiki energy from the universal source of life through the healer and into themselves.
Reiki energy has its own intelligence in the sense that it comes from universal consciousness. It knows where to go and what to do. In fact, the Reiki healer is not doing the healing, you are! We are just the straw; your spirit connects with the consciousness and does the healing while you relax. Because of this, Reiki can never do harm.
It is important that the practitioner is aware of their own energy and external energies. Energy work is a big deal as it is our core essence. Always make sure anyone working in energy knows how to maintain their own "energetic hygiene".
Our sessions begin with a thorough Smudging/Aura Cleansing to clear any of these external energies off you. We cleanse ourselves and our treatment rooms between every session.
Do I Need to Do Anything to Prepare for a Reiki Session?
Come as you are, the only suggestion we have is to wear comfortable clothes so you can relax on the table.
We don't recommend having a full day of activity scheduled after your session. Some people may need more rest after Reiki so that your body can heal. On the other hand, some people have tons of energy and feel like they could run a marathon. There really is no telling which experience you will have until after your session so just listen to your body.
Do I Need to Take Off Clothes to Have Reiki Done?
Absolutely not, no Reiki practitioner anywhere should suggest that you do. The only exception is if you are getting a massage.
Where Will I Be Touched During a Reiki Session?
Your comfort and well-being are our highest priority. Our healers are trauma informed and will respect any level of comfort that you need to feel safe during your session. If you are sensitive to touch, let us know and we will hover slightly over your body the whole session. We typically touch the sides, top, & back of the head, shoulders, abdomen, sides of the hips, knees and feet. We hover around your throat and only female therapists will ask if you are comfortable with us placing a hand on the upper chest to treat your heart. Male therapists will hover.
If you have back pain, tell us and we can also work on your back, although the Reiki energy usually treats that area from the positions listed.
What Should I Expect to Feel During and After?
Every Reiki session is different because everyone is different, so it's hard to say exactly what you will experience. Many people feel the energy as heat. You may feel gurgling in your body as blockages are released, or little muscle spasms. Some people feel the sensation of waves or feel like they are in water. Some people fall into a light sleep, because they are so deeply relaxed. You may feel that emotions coming to the surface, just try to release them. People often experience a feeling of peace or bliss. Some see colors or receive intuitive messages. Despite what you may or may not feel, the important part is relaxation, and nearly everyone feels that.
After a session people typically feel a lot lighter. You may feel more optimistic, and people often have greater clarity. Some people even feel that their vision is clearer, or colors are more vibrant. They feel more connected to their inner wisdom, and the everyday stress of life is easier to move through.
How Long Will the Reiki Last?
We seal the Reiki in so that the energy keeps working through you after the session.Yes, even after you leave our office you will still be healing. Most people can go about 2 weeks before the Reiki energy stops flowing through them. This doesn't mean that you should come back every two weeks, it means the Reiki will be in you for two weeks. After that it is up to you to change the patterns that created the blockages that we discuss in your session. The Reiki makes it easier for you to do just that!
Everyone's life situation is different. If you are experiencing overwhelming stress in your life or some sort of illness, you may need Reiki at that two-week mark to keep the healing going. Reiki is a cumulative therapy, it is healing. You will need Reiki less and less as you progress. Because everyone's process is different, we leave it up to you to tell us when you need us!
I Had a Bad Experience Somewhere Else, Should I try Reiki Again?
That is a question only you can answer. If something about Reiki is still calling out to you it may be that the person you saw wasn't the right healer for you. There is a relationship of trust that develops between a healer and client, and that trust is sacred. It should be honored, a good Reiki practitioner will always hold space for you, validate your feelings, and help you feel as safe as possible so you can heal as deeply as possible.
This is our goal and our standard of practice.
